Nirvan Athreya is a musician based in Hyderabad, India. He has garnered over a decade of global experience collaborating with award winning artists and composing for international film & multimedia productions. He is a trained jazz & classical pianist. Nirvan’s musical prowess is rooted in folk music from around the world.
In 2018, he performed with the Pletenitsa Balkan Choir at the 10th Annual Middle Eastern Festival in Boston sharing the stage with jazz giant Tigran Hamasyan.
In 2022 he was invited by CADALFest (funded by Arts & Humanities Research Council, UK) to compose and perform an original folk song with the Hyderabad group “Shaheen”.
Nirvan has contributed music to the short film "Arising", directed by Saraswathi Balgam (accredited on blockbuster hits such as The Hunger Games & Django Unchained. His debut film score for Nitin K. Pamnani’s 'Mein Tumhara Kavi Hoon' won Best Documentary Award at the Mumbai International Film Festival, 2012. He has also collaborated on multiple films with award winning film-maker Pavitra Chalam (Director of Netflix documentary, Rooting for Roona).
Nirvan is a recipient of the Asia Tour Scholarship Award from Berklee College of Music. He blends his formal training in western composition & production with folk sounds to create an intriguingly deep sound pallete. For this unique quality, he was invited to work as a composer on two-time Grammy award nominee, Ysaye Maria Barnwell’s collaborative international album: ‘Our American Anthem'.
Nirvan has worked as Piano Faculty at one of India's top contemporary residential music institutes, Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music. He has also collaborated with non-profit organisations like Shaheen and Yakshi to facilitate music workshops to enable creative expression with rural and urban communities.
